Artist Statement

This collection of work is a review of the two years I have spent as an apprentice. I have worked with many traditional functional forms, building a strong foundation in my understanding of the materials and history of ceramic arts. This is the beginning of my work as an artist. It says a lot about what I have been working on, but nothing about what may lie ahead. It is a review of my apprenticeship.

It is incredible to me that, with all of the time I have already invested in ceramics, I feel as though I have just barely begun to scratch the surface of this ancient art. Thousands of artists have spent their lives in this field, yet there are still so many areas to explore. At this point, my interest lies in re-creating functional forms. Working this way opens my understanding of what these thousands of clay artists have achieved, and gives me a base from which to build my future work.
