"50" - New Work by Charlie Cummings

December 8th - 28th, 2007

Introduction

A couple of years ago I set out to start making work that spoke of my life.  I chose to focus on vases because their function allows for exploration of a wide variety of forms.  I also wanted to make pots that were more involved and technically challenging, so I began assembling multiple parts and adding many feet.  To my surprise, the resulting pots had a retro-futuristic feel.

Around the same time I began exploring surface decoration.  I received a grant from the Indiana Arts Commission for a screen printing press to print ceramic decals. The images I chose to work with came from everyday life...video games, insects, automobile decorations, tattoos, and cartoons.  Many are images you might not expect to see in art.

When combined, the vases and decals tell stories from a life fueled by candy and caffeine, spent watching cartoons and science fiction while listening to strange music.  The work harkens to a more optimistic time when cars and appliances were made to look futuristic, while at the same time acknowledging the bittersweet results the future may bring.

The glaze prints in this exhibition focus on the pop images I have collected or created for potential use as decals on my pots.  Learning to screen print has allowed me to explore a new and exciting way to create images.
