Curating & Jurying
I established the Charlie Cummings Gallery in 2001 to promote emerging ceramic artists. My gallery has hosted over 60 exhibitions that focus on sculptural and functional ceramics. Working closely with thousands of artists and doing research in support of the exhibitions I have curated has given me a rare if not unique perspective on the robust diversity and trends in ceramics.
I often spend months researching artists looking for work that provides a counterpoint or balance to the work I have chosen for an exhibition. In the course of my research I have developed a greater understanding of current trends on both functional and sculptural ceramics. This rare understanding of the breadth and depth of the field of contemporary ceramics allows me to create sophisticated exhibitions that focus on a specific genre of ceramics or a wide survey of the incredible variety of contemporary clay artworks being produced today.
Because I feel it is vital to go beyond the group of artists that are well-known and featured in many exhibitions, many collectors rely on me to introduce them to new artists. While I work with many well-recognized artists, many of the young artists I have worked with early on are now taking lead roles in the field of ceramics.
If you are interested in having me share some of my observations with your students, would like to have me judge or curate and exhibition for your gallery, or need advice on how to organize an exhibition, please feel free to contact me.
